Corrick Reaches 1,000 Strikeouts as USF Extends Win Streak to Eight

Corrick becomes the second pitcher in program history to reach the milestone

TAMPA, Fla., March 5, 2022 – University of South Florida pitcher Georgina Corrick threw her 1,000th career strikeout as the Bulls swept the second day of the USF Tournament with wins over UIC, 4-0, and Army, 4-1.

“It was definitely a really high intensity moment,” Corrick said. “Going in, I wasn’t really worried about the number or it being 1,000. We were in a tight situation with a runner on third and I just wanted to make sure I gave our team the best chance that I could to win.”

Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) earned the win in both games, tossing a combined total of 9.1 shutout innings where she struck out 12 batters. She becomes USF’s second pitcher in program history to reach the milestone, joining Sara Nevins who tossed 1,103 during her career. Overall, Corrick has struck out 1,003 batters, just under a third of the total number of batters that she’s faced in her career (3,127).

Additionally, Corrick improved to 12-0 on the year with five shutouts. Her ERA sits at 0.09, allowing only one earned run in 82.1 innings in the circle. She hasn’t allowed a run in 52.2 innings or an earned run in 58.2 innings.

Game 1 – USF 4, UIC 0

The Bulls wasted no time getting on the board in game one. Madison Epperson (Tampa) singled through the right side with runners on first and second, which drove Alexis Johns (Sarasota) home and gave USF a 1-0 lead.

The Bulls capitalized on defense mistakes in the second to extend the lead. With Hallie Bryant (Trenton, Fla.) on first and Courtney Waldo (Palmetto, Fla.) on third, aggressive baserunning drew a throw to second to defend against a steal followed by an errant throw going to third which allowed Waldo to score extending USF’s lead to 2-0.

South Florida furthered its lead in the fourth. Dezarae Maldonado (Winter Haven, Fla.) started the scoring in the inning by crossing home on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Megan Pierro (Lutz) drove home Johns to seal a 4-0 win.

Game 2 – USF 6, FAMU 3

Similarly to game one, the Bulls again struck early in game two. Epperson reached on an error to start the inning and after she was pinch run for by Emilee Hanlon (Dunkirk, N.Y.), Hanlon stole second to reach scoring position. Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg) doubled to score Hanlon, then scored herself later in the inning on a Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel) single.

Army responded in the fifth, driving home a run on a sacrifice fly then threatened to bring more home with runners on first and third and two out. Corrick entered the game in relief and retired her first batter to hit the 1,000 mark, ending the threat.

The Bulls sealed the win with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) scored on a Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers, Fla.) double, while Pierro scored as Epperson singled up the middle.
