Childress Named C-USA All-Academic Team

DALLAS – Rachael Childress continues to rack up the accolades in her senior campaign, this time being named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team as announced by the league office on Friday morning.

“It is such an honor to be named to the C-USA All-Academic Team,” said Childress. “Being a student-athlete is not always the easiest task and I wouldn’t be where I am today without such amazing academic advisors and tutors. I am very thankful to be able to play basketball while earning my degree from such an amazing university.”

Childress has already been named CoSIDA District 4 Academic All-District First Team this season.

The Rogersville, Ala. native is studying management with concentrations in general management and honors business. She holds a 3.70 GPA and has been named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll three times as well as earning the C-USA Academic Medal and UAB Presidential Honors. In January she was announced as one of 30 finalists for the NCAA women’s basketball Senior CLASS Award. She was named C-USA Spirit of Service Award winner last season as the representative from UAB.

On the court, Childress is one of the best three-point shooters in NCAA history. She is the active career leader in threes (411) and currently sits in sixth place all-time in threes made. Earlier this season she broke both the UAB and C-USA records for career triples. She currently ranks second in the nation in triples on the season (99) and sits at sixth in three-point percentage (46.0%).

The senior ranks first in C-USA in threes made, threes per game (3.5) and three-point percentage. She is fourth in the league in scoring (17.0), second in free-throw percentage (86.3%) and 11th in field goal percentage (43.8%).

“Rachael is the epitome of what a UAB women’s basketball player is all about,” said head coach Randy Norton. “She puts 100 percent effort into everything she does whether it be basketball, in the classroom or in the community. She is an amazing young woman and an incredible role model for everyone around her.”

Childress is joined by Charlotte’s Christian Hithe, Rice’s Erica Ogwumike, UTEP’s Katarina Zec and WKU’s Dee Givens on the five-woman All-Academic Team.

Childress along with seniors Miyah Barnes, Imani Johnson, Lea Kerstein, Trista Magee and Angela Vendrell will all be celebrated after Saturday’s game against Southern Miss for Senior Day. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Bartow Arena with Senior Day festivities scheduled at the conclusion of the game.
