Charlotte Checkers Sign Forwards Greg Meireles and Matthew Wedman to One-Year AHL Contracts

SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that the club’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, have signed forwards Greg Meireles and Matthew Wedman to one-year AHL contracts.

Meireles, 21, appeared in 48 regular season games with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2019-20, producing 65 points (31-34-65) and served as the club’s co-captain. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound native of Ottawa, Ontario, recorded an OHL career-best 36 goals and 97 points in 68 games with Kitchener in the 2018-19 season.

Originally selected by Florida in the sixth round (168th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft, Meireles appeared in 244 career OHL regular season games, registering 239 points (99-140-239).

Wedman, 21, appeared in 35 regular season games with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2019-20, posting 36 points (17-19-36). The 6-foot-3, 207-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta, also appeared in 19 games with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, notching 17 points (6-11-17), while serving as the team’s captain.


Originally selected by Florida in the seventh round (199th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft, Wedman appeared in 310 career WHL regular season games, amassing 211 points (92-119-211).
