C-USA Football: Sept. 14 Players of the Week

DALLAS – After setting a school record with 197 rushing yards and scoring a touchdown in a wild win at Texas State, UTSA sophomore RB Sincere McCormick earned the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week award.  The Defensive Player of the Week honor went to Charlotte junior LB Tyler Murray, who registered 14 tackles and played a role in three turnovers at Appalachian State, recording an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  The Special Teams Player of the Week award was given to UTSA senior K Hunter Duplessis, who scored 15 points and kicked three field goals, including the 29-yard game-winner in double-overtime at Texas State.  C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league’s media.

McCormick started his sophomore season with a bang, rushing for a school-record 197 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries — also a program record — to help lead UTSA to a 51-48 double-overtime victory at Texas State on Saturday.  The Converse, Texas product ripped off a pair of 58-yard runs — one in each half — en route to eclipsing his own program standard of 189 yards set last fall versus UTEP.  The 2019 C-USA Freshman of the Year spearheaded a ground attack that piled up 330 yards, the third-best in UTSA annals, and his single-game rushing total is the most by any FBS player this season.

Murray posted double-digit tackles and played a role in three key turnovers as Charlotte battled Appalachian State.  The Jacksonville, Florida, native recovered a fumble to thwart an App State scoring drive at the Charlotte one-yard line on their first possession of the game.  His third-quarter interception stopped another drive into the red zone and his forced fumble at the Mountaineers 20-yard line gave Charlotte a chance to tie midway through the fourth quarter. The transfer from Troy finished the game with 14 tackles, 1.0 TFL, a FR, a FF and an INT in his 49ers debut.

Duplessis extended his consecutive field goals made streak to 12 with a perfect 3-for-3 day, including the game-winner in the second overtime of UTSA’s 51-48 victory at Texas State on Saturday afternoon. The senior from San Antonio split the uprights from 27 yards in the second quarter and 42 yards midway through the fourth before drilling a 29-yarder to seal the win on the final possession of the second extra period.  Duplessis also was 6 for 6 on extra points, extending his stretch of successful PATs to 31.
