BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 17-ranked Florida Atlantic beach volleyball team (12-9, 2-2 CUSA) opened up play at the Death Volley Invitational on Friday, falling in a pair of 5-0 battles against No. 3 Stanford (15-2, 1-1 Pac-12) and in a rematch against No. 1 USC (20-2, 0-0 Pac-12).

Stanford captured the opening lead on court four as Logan Mignerey and Kate McLaughlin dropped a two-set battle against the Cardinal’s Maya Harvey and Ashley Vincent, 20-22, 15-21. The Cardinal went up 2-0 with a straight-set win on court five as Mikayla Law-Heese and Olivia Strandberg fell against Stanford’s 5s pair of Kate Reilly and Clara Stowell, 16-21, 11-21. The Cardinal clinched the dual, 3-0, on court three as the Sandy Owls’ Julie Honzovicova and Ashleigh Adams fell in two sets to Stanford’s Kelly Belardi and Chloe Hoffman, 17-21, 18-21. Stanford extended their lead to 4-0 after taking another two-set battle on court two, with Florida Atlantic’s Courtney Moon and Svozilova falling against the Cardinal’s Taylor Wilson and Ruby Sorra, 19-21, 20-22. The Cardinal eventually closed out the 5-0 battle on court one as the Sandy Owls’ Sloane Woolwine and Reese Edwards fell in straight sets against Stanford’s Xolani Hodel and Brooke Rockwell, 12-21, 19-21.

USC took the opening point on court four as the Sandy Owls’ Alivia Orvieto and Logan Mignerey fell in two sets against the Trojans’ Madison White and Ashley Pater, 23-25, 11-21. The Trojans extended their lead to 2-0 with a 21-17, 21-17 win on court five as the Sandy Owls’ Mikayla Law-Heese and Olivia Strandberg dropped their match against USC’s Ainsley Radell and Mabyn Thomas. The Trojans clinched the match at the 1s as Courtney Moon and Marketa Svozilova fell in a straight-set battle against USC’s top pair of Megan Kraft and Delaynie Maple, 11-21, 13-21. USC pushed their lead to 4-0 on court three. The Sandy Owls’ Julie Honzovicova and Ashleigh Adams captured the second set but couldn’t rally in the third as they fell in the three-set decision against USC’s Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse. USC closed out the match on court two as Florida Atlantic’s Sloane Woolwine and Reese Edwards fell in a two-set match against the Trojans’ Grace Seits and Maddi Kriz, 15-21, 12-21.
