Bulls Rally to Victory in Eighth Inning for Second Straight Sweep

DATE: April 7, 2019

USF won its fifth extra-inning game against ECU, 3-2, with a walk-off in the bottom of the eighth for a sweep over the Pirates

TAMPA, April 7, 2019 – USF secured its second straight sweep with a 3-2 walk-off win in extra innings against the Pirates on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls improve to 7-2 in conference play with six straight wins.

USF (29-14, 7-2) and ECU (19-20, 1-8) battled through six scoreless innings until the Pirates got runners on with a pair of singles and scored both on a hard-hit double to right center.

The Bulls rallied in the sixth inning, tying up the game at 2-2. Junior AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) drew a walk, and advanced on a groundout. With two outs, senior Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) hit a bloop single to center field, and Bruni sprinted home to cut into the Pirates lead. Freshman Megan Hargraves (Okeechobee, Fla.) entered to pinch run for Cook, and senior Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.)  crushed a double to right field on her first pitch to tie the game, scoring Hargraves.

The seventh inning saw a batter walk for the Pirates who would get left stranded, and a single by the Bulls but nothing more. The teams entered the eighth still tied, 2-2. Sophomore Georgina Corrick was in her 15th inning of the weekend and came up with a clutch swinging strikeout to close the top of the eight and get USF back up to bat.

Bruni stepped up to the plate and dropped a double perfectly down the right field line. She advanced on a groundout and Cook drew a walk to put runners on the corners with one out. Devitt, who earlier recorded the game-tying RBI, popped a ball up to second base and it was subsequently dropped. ECU’s second baseman picked up the ball and threw to second to force out Cook, but Devitt made it to first on the error and Bruni sprinted home in her second run of the day for the walk-off win.

Corrick recorded her 16th victory of the season. She finished the weekend with 19 strikeouts, nine in the series finale. She allowed just two runs all weekend and six hits in 15 innings.
