Bulls in Fifth After Day 2 of Carpet Capital Collegiate

Mbetse continued to lead USF in its first tournament of the fall while Bergstrom carded a hole-in-one Saturday in Rocky Face, Ga.

USF is in fifth place at a challenging 15-team tournament that features four top-25 teams from last season and nine total programs that were ranked in the top 50 by Golfstat.

ROCKY FACE, Ga., SEPT. 7, 2019 – Massimo Mbetse continued to lead the fifth-place Bulls while Albin Bergstrom carded a hole-in-one in Saturday’s second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate.

Mbetse followed up his career best 2-under 70 in Friday’s opening round with a 73 that included an eagle on the par-5, 518-yard 15th hole. The sophomore from Bradenton, Fla./South Africa is currently tied for fourth place in the 81-player field and seeks his first top-10 finish as a Bull.

Bergstrom provided the highlight of the day with his hole-in-one on the par-3, 243-yard eighth hole, which helped him shoot even par on the front nine. The sophomore from Ljunghusen, Sweden is tied with teammate Kyle Flexsenhar at 6-over and they’re just two shots outside the top 25.

USF (+13) finished the day two shots away from fourth place. Leader Georgia Tech (-7) was the only team to post an under-par score for the second straight round.

Sophomore Luke Gifford is four shots outside the top 10 at 3-over (73-74) after an even-par performance on the front nine in the second round. The Boca Raton, Fla., native shot par or better on 15 holes Saturday.

Quotable
Head coach Steve Bradley’s thoughts on USF’s second round and Sunday’s final round:
“It really was an up-and-down day. We didn’t play that great, but the course is tough and a little mistake turns into a double bogey. We have to be more patient tomorrow and do a better job of  thinking through our shots before hitting them. The two easiest holes on the course we played over-par today. We need to learn from that and put together a solid round tomorrow.”
