Senior Lindsey Devitt hit a solo homer in the first inning to power USF to a 1-0 victory

WICHITA, KAN., May 5, 2019 – In an intense game at the Wilkins Softball Stadium, USF took down the shockers, 1-0, to clinch its second straight American Athletic Conference regular season title, its third in four years.

The Bulls (39-17, 17-4) entered the matchup needing just one game to clinch the title and post the best American Athletic Conference record in league history. USF, voted on by conference coaches as the preseason favorite, won five American Athletic Conference series by way of sweeps. The Bulls dropped their first two games with the Shockers (31-24, 12-9) to make for a meaningful regular season finale in Wichita, Kan., as the Bulls fought for the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament next week.

Senior Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.) struck early for USF, putting the Bulls on the board in the first inning when she blasted a ball so high to left field that it soared over the scoreboard. USF continued to battle in each inning, getting two runners on base in each of the last three innings.

The Shockers threatened with the possible tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and a double to right field put runners on second and third with two outs, but a popup caught by Devitt stranded both runners.

Sophomore Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) struck out eight batters in the Bulls’ win, coming up with two clutch swinging strikeouts in the seventh inning to shatter any chance of a comeback for Wichita State. The right-handed pitcher limited the Shockers to two hits in her 23rd win of the season.
