Man charged with attempted murder in Hollywood

On July 2, 2021, A Hollywood Police Officer was outside of Police Headquarters when they were flagged down by 43-year-old Shawn Brennen. Brennen began making threatening remarks towards the Officer. The Officer began creating distance between themselves and the suspect, when Brennen began running towards the Officer. The Officer went inside of the lobby of the Department and Brennen followed. That’s where a violent struggle ensued and Brennen attempted to remove the Officers firearm. Multiple Officers came to the assistance of the other Officer, to help subdue Brennen and take him into custody. Brennen has been charged with Attempted Premeditated Murder, Armed Robbery, Armed Burglary, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer.

Rest of Champlain Towers South comes down

From David VolzThe remaining portion of the Champlain Towers South condominium building in Surfside was demolished in a controlled demotion Sunday evening July 4th. All necessary drilling work was completed on Sunday and then the building was brought down.

Police involved shooting in Hollywood

On July 3rd 2021, at approximately 11:10 A.M., officers of the Hollywood Police Department were called out to the 5200 block of Hollywood Blvd to assist rescue personnel with a combative subject. Upon arrival, a struggled ensued, and an officer discharged their firearm, striking the subject once in the lower back area. The victim was transported by Hollywood Fire Rescue to Memorial Regional with non-life threatening injuries. As with any shooting involving an officer with our Department, The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be taking over as the lead in this investigation.

Broward County students do well in speech and debate tournament

After a weeklong virtual competition, three Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students earned top honors in several categories of the National Speech and Debate Association’s (NSDA) 2021 Speech and Debate Online Tournament.  Miramar High School senior Sophia Williams was named the 2021 National Speech and Debate Champion in the Program Oral Interpretation category. Additionally, Ophilea Abidoye from Western High School won second place in Storytelling, and Caitlin Williams from Everglades High School placed third in Original Spoken Word Poetry.

The NSDA’s 2021 National Speech and Debate Online Tournament, which took place from June 13 –19, gathered more than 6,000 middle and high school students from more than
1,400 schools around the nation to compete in 25 different events.

“We are extremely proud to recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of these students, who are among the best in the country,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “The skills they have acquired through participation in our District’s robust speech and debate program help prepare these young adults to excel in their future careers.”

BCPS is proud to have the largest speech and debate public school program in the nation. The Debate Initiative, which started during the 2012/13 school year with 15 high schools, is now active at every high school, every middle school and more than 100 elementary schools throughout the District. Speech and debate students learn research, logic, organization of ideas, manipulation of language and assessment of audience, while engaging in world events and building self-esteem.
