The season has passed, Lions will be able to be at the Super Bowl as Spectators. But Brad Holmes came out for his end of the season presser and made it clear, this season is not a fluke or lucky. And the fact is he’s tired of hearing it.
He talked of the scouting department, and how just aiming for the most talented guys is the easy button. But he wants his scouts to look for the combination of talent and chemistry fit. He specifically pointed back at the 2021 draft and called out beat writer Carlos Monarrez for bashing the Penei Sewell pick instead of a QB that season. Because of his disdain for Jared Goff. And the fact that Carlos said 3rd round compensatory pick Ifeatu Melifonwu was a wasted pick. He made sure Carlos knew he was keeping receipts (well deserved, Carlos has been one of the most negative beat writers historically. )
Brad Holmes also stated that he never gave a timestamp on the rebuild. He also added he should have never called it a retool. Because it has been a rebuild. He also said this is not a Cinderella year for our Lions. He’s self motivated to continue to build this team for maintained success.
And us in the media needs to remember. He is paid for 5 years to do this job. And year 3 was such a success, we probably shouldn’t doubt his decisions for this team with his and Dan Campbell’s vision.
He also hinted at trading out of the first round…for a player or just further back in the draft (he didn’t get specific.) Whatever he does, I’m sure it just might turn to gold. Because so far, you cannot call Jameson Williams a bust and Jahmyr Gibbs looked worth every bit of his 12th pick overall.
So, to all of us in the media, maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to judge picks in the first year. Because players are not considered a bust until after year 3. Brad Holmes literally said this and called out Carlos again.
Trust the vision and process of this front office and enjoy the product they put on the field.
