Bowe Wins Bronze Medal

BEIJING – Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball alumna Brittany Bowe will come back home with new bling, earning the bronze medal in the speedskating 1,000 meters at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games on Thursday.

Racing in her third Olympics, Bowe skated in the final pairing of 15 to log a time of 1:14.61, as she entered the race as the reigning World Champion in that event. She is the first American to win a medal in the 1,000-meter race since Chris Witty did so in 2002.

The 1,000 meters was the third of Bowe’s three events she competed in at this year’s Olympics. Bowe also placed 10th in the 1,500 meters and 16th in the 500 meters.

“Two of the most special things that have ever happened to me in my life are (1) giving Erin [Jackson] the opportunity to win a gold medal at the Olympics, and (2) more than anything, representing the United States by carrying the flag into opening ceremonies,” said Bowe. “There hasn’t been a more powerful and uniting experience that I’ve been a part of. [Also] to be selected to lead Team USA out into the world for the Beijing Olympics, it’s an honor of a lifetime.”

Bowe played basketball at FAU from 2006 to 2010 as an everyday starter at point guard. Her senior season, Bowe started every game (29) averaging 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, while earning a spot on the Sun Belt All-Conference Third Team. Bowe is one of nine Owls to belong to the 1,000 point club at FAU and was inducted to the FAU Hall of Fame in 2019.

“Go Owls! I’m feeling the love from coast to coast. Boca Raton and Florida Atlantic holds a close place in my heart, and I couldn’t be more honored to represent the Owls,” said Bowe when asked about receiving support from the FAU community.
