Blazers Travel to Denton to Face North Texas

DENTON, Texas – After a tough loss to top ranked Rice the Blazers look to rebound with a road win against North Texas on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Super Pit.

UAB (15-8, 7-4 C-USA) was shut down offensively by the Owls Thursday night, scoring only 53 points on 33.9 percent shooting. The Blazers conference leading offense was held to well below its average points, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and threes per game.

One of the few bright spots was the UAB bench which outscored Rice’s bench 25-9. Junior Zakyia Weathersby recorded nine points with four rebounds and one block, Margaret Whitley scored seven points and tallied two steals and Sam Mitchell added six points with two triples.

North Texas (9-13, 3-7 C-USA) has faced a tough stretch of games playing three teams in the top half of the conference standings. The Mean Green have fallen in each of those games and lost seven of their last nine contests.

The Mean Green are one of the best rebounding teams in the country ranking 39th in the NCAA and second in C-USA with 41.5 rebounds per game. They are led by Anisha George who averages 8.4 boards per game while also leading the team in points per game (12.6) and blocks (26).

“North Texas’ strengths are offensive rebounding and attacking the basket to get to the free throw line,” said head coach Randy Norton. “We know they are going to guard us hard so we will have to take care of the basketball and execute our offense.”

The Blazers and Mean Green have met 10 times with North Texas leading the series 6-4. However, UAB has gotten the best of North Texas recently, winning the last three meetings with the Mean Green. In the last meeting, UAB walked away with a 10-point victory as four different Blazers scored in double-figures. Miyah Barnes led UAB with 20 points, Deanna Kuzmanic and Imani Johnson each had 15 and Rachael Childress added 14 of her own.
