Blazer’s Offense Ignites as UAB Women’s Basketball Defeats UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Rachael Childress moved into sixth place in NCAA history in threes made in UAB’s 87-51 win over UTSA on Saturday afternoon.

Childress scored 24 points in 22 minutes shooting 66.7 percent from the field and going 4-for-5 from long range including recording her 411th career three to move into sixth place. Imani Johnson added 14 of her own with five rebounds. Lea Kerstein scored 13, going 3-for-4 from three. 

UAB (18-10, 10-6 C-USA) found a first quarter spark from Childress who recorded 12 of her 24 points in the first 10 minutes of play. The Blazers went on a 11-2 run to close out the first quarter and lead 26-19.

UTSA (6-21, 2-14 C-USA) opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run before the Blazers scored 16 unanswered. Childress added seven more, Angela Vendrell scored five and Sara Rosenfeldt added four. UAB went into the half with a 17-point lead.

 Seven different Blazers scored in the third quarter to increase UAB’s lead to 30 points going into the final 10 minutes of play.

Kerstein knocked down two more threes in the fourth quarter to bring her total to three on the afternoon. With 2:09 remaining in the game, Jasmine Gracie stole the ball off an inbounds pass and streaked down the court for a fast break layup to give UAB a 40-point lead. UTSA scored the final four points of the game but the Blazers walked away with the 87-51 victory on the road.

“I’m really pleased with our team’s effort and energy today,” said head coach Randy Norton. “It was a great team win for us today.”

UAB reeled in 47 rebounds on the afternoon to win the battle on the glass, leading to 15 second chance points. 

The Blazers will travel to Old Dominion on Thursday, March 5 for the final road conference game of the season.
