Big Second Half Lifts UAB Women’s Soccer Over North Texas 2-1

BIRMINGHAM – Morgan Halliwill’s goal in the 80th minute broke a 1-1 deadlock to lift UAB to a 2-1 victory over North Texas on Friday night at BBVA Field.

With the win, the Blazers (4-8-2, 3-3-0 C-USA) move into a tie for second place in the C-USA West division with nine points. UNT (7-4-3, 2-3-1 C-USA) fall to a tie for fourth place in the division with seven points.

The Mean Green got on the board first when Jenna Sheely’s header went over the outstretch arms of Blazers’ keeper Eve Beyer.

Lexxe Lipsey got the equalizer from 25 yards out off a pass from Laura Zemberyova in the 67th minute. Her shot from just outside the box sailed over North Texas keeper Sarah Fuller into the net on the left side.

The game-winner was set up when Zemberyova took the ball on the right side and found Halliwill at the top center of the goal area. Her strike got past Fuller into the right corner.

“I really felt like we switched to our game plan in the second half with how we wanted to play,” said head coach Erica Demers. “Lexxe and Morgan capitalized on phenomenal opportunities.”

Up next, the Blazers hit the road to face Middle Tennessee on Oct. 17. This match is not part of the Conference USA East/West crossover and will not be counted in the league standings. The Blue Raiders (9-5-1, 5-2-0 C-USA) defeated UTEP 2-0 earlier tonight.
