Big First Half Lifts North Texas Past UAB 3-1

DENTON, Texas – North Texas (6-2-0, 3-1-0 C-USA) scored twice in the first 10 minutes of Friday’s match in its 3-1 victory over UAB (7-4-1, 2-2-0 C-USA) at UNT Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.

The Mean Green got on the board first when Brooke Lampe’s cross and found Berklee Peters for a header that got past Blazer keeper Anika Toth in the ninth minute. One minute and 31 seconds later, Elle Marie DeFrain was able to chip a bouncing pass from Allie Byrd into the net to give UNT a 2-0 advantage.

North Texas went ahead 3-0 after Madi Starrett’s corner kick was headed in by Byrd in the 18th minute.

In the 29th minute, Morgan Halliwill was fouled in the box, resulting in a UAB penalty kick. Kamilah Mustafa took the PK and put it past UNT keeper Kelsey Brann on the right side.

However, this would be the last goal of the contest for both teams. The Blazers fired seven shots at Brann in the 2nd half, with three being on goal.

Lexxe Lipsey led UAB with four shots and Laura Zemberyova added three. Toth finished the game with a career-high seven saves. 

UAB returns home on April 2 to face Rice at BBVA Field. The Owls (7-2-0, 2-1-0 C-USA) face Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon. The UAB Women’s Soccer Class of 2021 will be honored prior to next Friday’s match.

The regular season concludes at Louisiana Tech on April 9.
