OWLS IN REVIEW
Florida Atlantic took two of three from Charlotte in their inaugural American Conference series last weekend. After a rainout on Friday, the Owls swept a Saturday doubleheader with a pair of one-run victories. In the first game, late-inning home runs from Jake Millan and Patrick Ward paved the way for a 4-3 final.
In the nightcap, Spencer Rich was the catalyst. The senior led off with a single in the eighth inning, stole second and third, and then attempted to steal home. After initially being called out, Rich’s run was allowed to count due to an obstruction call on the Charlotte catcher. After the 49ers tied the game in the ninth, the Owls eventually went on to win on a walk-off hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th. Though Charlotte salvaged the series by winning Sunday’s finale, the Owls still ended the first weekend of conference play tied for first at 2-1.
WHO’S HOT
Ward also homered in Sunday’s game and has at least one RBI in six of the last eight games.
After scoring three of the Owls’ four runs in the first game of the DH on Saturday, Millan was held without a hit in the nightcap but drew three walks and added another run scored.
Pitching has been a strength for the Owls’ through the first 22 games led by starters C.J. Williams and Tyler Murphy. Williams has allowed just four earned runs in his last 24 innings. Murphy leads the Owls with a 1.80 ERA. He struck out six in six innings of work in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday.
THE OPPONENT
Memphis dropped two of three to USF in the opening weekend of conference play and then fell to Lipscomb on Tuesday in midweek action. The Tigers are 12-15 overall. They finished sixth (of eight) in the American last season.
Offensively, senior infielder Daunte Stuart leads the Tigers with a .336 average. Stuart has also chipped in four home runs and 22 RBI. As a team, Memphis leads the AAC in several offensive categories including runs scored.
OPPONENT HISTORY
Florida Atlantic and Memphis have never met in baseball.
UPCOMING
The Owls return home for a midweek matchup with Miami on Tuesday – the second and final time the Hurricanes visit Boca Raton this season. Next weekend’s conference series sees 15th-ranked and preseason AAC favorite East Carolina come to town.
