ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball saw its five-game win streak come to a close on Tuesday night with 3-2 defeat to UCF. The Owls return home to begin conference play Friday against Charlotte.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls took the lead in the second inning on a Patrick Ward RBI single to left field. UCF went ahead in the fifth before John Schroeder manufactured the tying run in the following frame. After a one-out walk, he moved to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. An Andrew McKenna sacrifice fly brought Schroeder home.
THE TURNING POINT/THE FINISH
The FAU offense drew five walks in the game but did not generate a hit after the second inning. Locked in a pitcher’s duel, UCF’s Andrew Sundean delivered the deciding blow in the bottom of the eighth. On a night where the wind was blowing in, Sundean’s line drive to left field touched down in the Owls’ bullpen to make it 3-2.
QUOTABLE
Head coach John McCormack
“It was a really good college baseball game. I thought we accorded ourselves well. But there were two mistakes made in the game and they were both by us. And we have to be better offensively. They threw well but we have to be able to mount more of an offense.”
THE ARMS
The Owls used five pitchers to get all but two outs after starter Zach Abbey left in the first inning with an injury.Dawson Ball pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, stranding runners on base in each of the first, second, and third innings.Max Martzolf allowed two runs in an inning and a third.Steven Andrews recorded five outs, allowed one hit, and struck out one.Danny Trehey conceded the go-ahead home run – the first run he’s allowed this season in over 16 innings.
THE BATS
Schroeder and Ward had the only two hits of the night for the Owls.
WHAT’S NEXT
The Owls will look to get back on the horse at home on Friday night when Charlotte comes to town for the first American Athletic Conference game in program history. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
