BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (17-10, 4-3) could not solve East Carolina (22-6, 5-2) ace Trey Yesavage on Friday night in a 4-1 defeat. One of the top prospects for the 2024 MLB Draft, the junior struck out 12 and held the FAU bats to three hits in seven innings.
THE BEGINNING
Florida Atlantic starter C.J. Williams acquitted himself well against the AAC’s top offense, but the Pirates did score early with a run in the first and two in the third. Williams settled in to retire seven straight before departing after six innings.
THE TURNING POINT/THE FINISH
Yesavage finally departed after seven innings and Brando Leroux greeted new ECU pitcher Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman with a leadoff double. Andrew McKenna eventually delivered a two-out RBI single to break the shutout but that was where the comeback hopes ended for the Owls.
QUOTABLE
Head coach John McCormack
“Their guy [Yesavage] was as-advertised. There were a couple moments there where I thought we might have something going. As I said all week, you’re going to get one pitch; you have to recognize it and do something with it. And we weren’t able to. Credit to him. It’s a long series. We just have to keep moving forward.”
THE BATS
Emilio Gonzalez finished with two of the Owls’ five hits.
Christian Adams, Leroux, and McKenna had the other three.
THE ARMS
Williams struck out five and walked four in six innings.
Nicholas Del Prado worked out of trouble in the seventh and eighth innings. He allowed one run on two hits. He also recorded three strikeouts.
Sam Drumheller pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Owls made four errors, three of which were throwing errors by pitchers.
ECU matched the Owls with five hits as well.
WHAT’S NEXT
The Owls will look to even the series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m.
