Balanced Scoring Attack Leads UAB WBB Over Marshall 77-65

BIRMINGHAM – Five Blazers scored in double-figures in UAB’s 77-65 victory over Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.

Zakyia Weathersby posted her seventh straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. One game after typing her career-high, Kylee Schneringer set a new mark with 15 points. Margaret Whitley scored 14 points, Emily Klaczek added 13 and Destinee McGhee 10 for the Blazers who improve to 12-6, 5-2 C-USA.

Marshall’s Savannah Wheeler scored a game-high 31 points on 12-of-25 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. CC Mays and Aaliyah Dunham each scored 13 points for the Thundering Herd (11-7, 6-3 C-USA).

Marshall came out of the gates by scoring the first six points of the game and would build a 1st quarter lead of nine points after Mays’ 3-pointer buzzer beater made the score 25-16 after the first 10 minutes.

After the teams exchanged baskets to start the 2nd quarter, the Blazers went on a 10-2 run to get within a point at 29-28. Schneringer’s 3-pointer at 3:37 tied the game at 31-31 and back-to-back baskets from Sara Rosenfeldt and Whitley gave UAB its first lead of the game 35-33 with 1:08 to play. Wheeler, who scored all 11 of Marshall’s points in the quarter, capped the 1st half scoring with a 3-pointer to give the Herd a 36-35 lead going into halftime.

The 3rd quarter saw three ties and three lead changes. Dunham’s 3-pointer at 5:46 put Marshall ahead 47-41 before the Blazers scored the next seven points with Schneringer’s and-1 at 4:23 giving UAB the lead 48-47. They would hold the one-point advantage going into the final stanza.

Ten seconds into the 4th quarter Whitley converted the rare 4-point play. On the next possession, Wheeler had an and-1 to get Marshall within a basket at 57-55. However, the Blazers went on a 16-5 run to open up their lead to 13 points at 73-60 with 3:34 remaining.

“I’m so proud of the fight the team had the last three quarters,” said head coach Randy Norton. “That’s the sign of a great team and an opportunity for the team to grow. You get five players in double-digits, you’re going to be a hard out.”

Up next, UAB hits the road to face Middle Tennessee on Feb. 5. The Blue Raiders (15-4, 7-2 C-USA) defeated WKU 71-64 earlier today. The next home game will be the rescheduled contest against North Texas on Feb. 7.
