TOKYO – Mark Kolozsvary and Team USA capped off a memorable Olympic games by securing the silver medal in baseball at Tokyo 2020 on Saturday morning. Although the United States came up short in the gold-medal game against Japan by a 2-0 score, the Stars and Stripes still come home with the silver medal and a 4-2 overall record at the Olympics.

With all current and former Gators officially done competing at Tokyo 2020, Florida wraps up competition with a grand total of 17 medals won – tied for the second-highest medal count in school history. Florida student-athletes combined for an all-time high 21 medals at the 1984 Olympics and finished with 17 back in 2012. Florida currently ranks second among all NCAA schools in 2020 medals won.

The runner-up finish represents Team USA’s fourth medal in the last five Olympic baseball competitions, which is tied with Cuba for the most medals dating back to 1996. Team USA previously won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and bronze in both 2008 (Beijing) and 1996 (Atlanta).

Despite having medaled three times prior to this year, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics mark the first time that the United States has claimed a silver medal in baseball.

In the gold-medal final, Kolozsvary earned his sixth start behind the plate in as many games and caught all eight defensive innings for Team USA. Kolozsvary caught all 54 innings for the United States during their time in Tokyo.

Across 21 total at-bats, Kolozsvary went 4-for-21 with two runs, two RBI, two walks and one stolen base. The former Gator made just one error over the course of six starts at catcher, posting a .983 fielding percentage.

Now an Olympic silver medalist, Kolozsvary will return to the United States and presumably pick up where he left off with the Cincinnati Reds organization. Kolozsvary is currently assigned to the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts and is slashing .238/.345/.434 in 2021 with four home runs, 12 doubles, 28 runs and 22 RBI across 34 games.
