American in National Rankings
Two of the top three schools in The American are ranked in the Top 25 in both the United Soccer Coaches Poll and Top Drawer Soccer Poll. SMU is ranked 4th and 5th in the two rankings, respectively, while FIU is ranked 14th and 19th in the two national polls. The Mustangs and Panthers played to a 2-2 draw on October 8 and currently are tied in second place in The American with 13 points.
Conference Tournament Bound
The Charlotte 49ers have already clinched a spot in The American conference tournament with 15 points in conference play. SMU and FIU will both look to clinch their spots in the tournament with wins this weekend.
Road Warriors
The American Athletic Conference has put together a strong resume on the road this season. Across the league, American teams have the fifth highest road success rate among all Division I conferences, which include a pair of road wins over Top 10 opponents.
Panthers Continue Unbeaten Streak in Conference Play
With a 4-0-1 record in conference play this season, the FIU Panthers have increased their unbeaten streak against American opponents to 14 straight matches. In their two years in The American, FIU has lost just two matches and only one at home.
American in the RPI
Five of the nine teams in The American are ranked in the Top 100 of the RPI as of October 15. SMU and FIU are both in the Top 10 with the Mustangs at 4 and Panthers at 7. Memphis is third at 28, followed by Charlotte at 37 and South Florida at 86. FIU (3), SMU (4), Charlotte (11) and Memphis (19) each have a Top 20 non-conference RPI.
