American Athletic Conference Football Saturday Night Notes | November 25

Tulane and SMU will meet next Saturday in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game after both schools finished 8-0 in conference play. The game will be at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT on ABC, with pregame coverage at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

It will be the second American Championship Game between teams that went 8-0 in conference play (Cincinnati vs. Houston in 2021) and the third championship game between conference unbeatens (Cincinnati and Tulsa were 6-0 in 2000).

The American Championship Game will be one of six conference championship games between teams ranked in last week’s USA Today Coaches’ Poll (along with the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC championship games).

The American has six bowl-eligible teams: Tulane, SMU, UTSA, Memphis, Rice and South Florida.

Tulane will be the third school to host the American Athletic Conference Championship Game in back-to-back seasons (UCF in 2017-18, Cincinnati in 2020-21).

Tulane went 8-0 in conference play for the second time in program history and the first time since 1934 in the SEC.

SMU went 8-0 in conference play for the first time in program history.

Two American Athletic Conference games were decided in the final second Saturday. Tulsa defeated East Carolina 29-27 on a Chase Meyer field goal with one second left, and North Texas topped UAB 45-42 on a field goal from Noah Rauschenberg as time expired.

The American’s postseason individual award-winners will be announced Wednesday, Nov. 29.
