American Athletic Conference Announces Women’s Basketball Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball awards for the week ending Sunday, January 14.

Player of the Week

Tiara Young, Gr., G, SMU

Young had an impressive week for the Mustangs, averaging 35 points and 10.5 rebounds in a pair of games. She led SMU to a double-overtime win at Memphis, scoring 38 points and grabbing 15 boards.  She went 18-for-22 from the charity stripe, setting the American Athletic Conference record for most free throws made in a game.

Freshman of the Week

Vittoria Blasigh, Fr., G, South Florida

Blasigh averaged 30.5 points for the Bulls in two games.  In the win against Tulsa, she scored 35 points on 13-of-25 shooting, while dishing out three assists and coming down with four rebounds.  She followed up with a 26 point performance on the road against Rice.

Weekly Honor Roll

Denim DeShields, So., G, UAB

DeShields led the Blazers to a pair of wins, averaging 19.5 points and eight assists in wins against East Carolina and SMU.

Tracey Hueston, Sr., F, Charlotte

Hueston averaged 22.5 points and six rebounds. In the win over Rice, Hueston scored 18 points and had six rebounds.

DesiRay Kernal, Gr., F, North Texas

Kernal led the Mean Green to a win over Wichita State, scoring 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

Idara Udo, Fr., F, UTSA

Udo hit the game winning layup with 1.8 seconds left against Charlotte. She finished with 26 points and nine rebounds in the contest.

Hannah Pratt, Gr., F, Tulane

Pratt led the Green Wave to a win over East Carolina, scoring 26 points and finishing with seven rebounds.
