BIRMINGHAM – Senior point guard Rachael Childress has been named one of 30 women’s basketball candidates for the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award.
The Senior CLASS Award recognizes student athletes that excel both on and off the court with notable achievements in the community, classroom, character and competition.
Childress shines on the court as the leading scorer in Conference USA and the nation’s active leader in career three-pointers made. The senior has been lights out so far averaging 17.3 points per game and 3.8 threes per game which is second best in the NCAA. This season she has broken multiple UAB records and became C-USA’s leading three-point scorer with 376 career triples and counting.
Off the court Childress has spent her fair share of time in the community working with Miracle League of Gardendale, Girls Inc., and the Birmingham V.A. Clinic among other community service activities. Last season Childress was one of 14 recipients of the C-USA Spirit of Service Award.
Childress is studying management with a concentration in general management and a second concentration in honors business. She has a 3.7 GPA and has been named to Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor, UAB Presidential Honors and the C-USA Academic Medal.
“Rachael represents everything our women’s basketball program is about,” said head coach Randy Norton. “She is a champion in the classroom, out in the community and obviously on the court. She has an amazing work ethic in everything she does, and it is great to see it all pay off for her.”
It is the second year in a row the Blazers have had a top 30 nominee, as last year Deanna Kuzmanic was named a candidate for the award. Rice’s Erica Ogwumike joins Childress as the only two candidates from C-USA.
The 60 total men’s and women’s basketball candidates will be narrowed down to two fields of 10 in February and those names will be placed on the official ballot for voting. Winners will be announced during the Men’s and Women’s Final Four later this spring.
