BIRMINGHAM – UAB looks to use Thursday night’s victory over FIU as momentum heading into another home contest with Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
UAB (10-7, 2-3 C-USA) has been inconsistent in Conference USA play so far this season but hopes Thursday night’s win will propel the Blazers forward for the remainder of league play.
The Green and Gold have seen plenty of production from Angela Vendrell lately who has averaged 9.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists over the last three games. The senior from Spain is fantastic with the basketball in her hands leading the conference in assist/turnover ratio with 2.2.
Rachael Childress continues to show why she is the league’s leading scorer after putting up 19 points on four made threes against FIU. Childress has scored 10 or more points in all but one game this season and continues to climb the ranks of NCAA’s top three-point shooters of all time.
Florida Atlantic (8-8, 2-3 C-USA) is much improved from a season ago, already surpassing its 2018-19 win total and fighting its way through a tough conference schedule.
Graduate transfer Crystal Primm has been instrumental in the Owl’s success averaging 14.4 points on the season with a team high 27 steals. Primm transferred to FAU from Auburn where she graduated in 2019 after spending one season with the Tigers following a transfer from Duke. She joins her father, FAU assistant coach Terry Primm, to finish out her playing career. Primm was named C-USA player of the week on Nov. 25.
Freshman Lotta Vehka-Aho is second on the team in scoring (12.4), first in assists (49) and tied with Primm for first in steals (27). The Freshman has twice been named C-USA freshman of the week, most recently last week after recording a combined 49 points over two games including a career high 28 against Rice.
“We are excited to play another home game against a very good FAU team,” said head coach Randy Norton. “Our team is all about family so it’s very appropriate for Saturday’s game to be Family Day. We want to encourage all our fans and their families to come out and support this team.”
Saturday’s game is Family day, families are encouraged to come as there will be pregame inflatables and family portraits offered on the concourse. There will also be a post-game shoot around on the court for kids and their families. Use promo code ‘wbbfamily’ to get four tickets for $10 on UABSports.com.
