TAMPA, FEB. 24, 2025 – University of South Florida baseball (4-3; 0-0 AAC) will play the first of a four-game homestand Tuesday when the Bulls take on Florida International University (7-1; 0-0 C-USA) at the USF Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and the game can be seen on ESPN+ or heard on Bulls Unlimited digital radio.
The Bulls come into the contest winners of their first two series of the season, after taking two of three at Georgia Southern. USF won the first two games in Statesboro, Ga., while an 11-inning loss in the third game prevented a sweep as the Bulls scored 30 runs in the three games.
USF opened their 60th season, and first under Mitch Hannahs, with a home series win over Iowa. They followed with their first non-conference series win since 2002, taking two of three games at Georgia Southern.
Setting The Stage:
Bryce Archie will get his second start of the season on Tuesday. The Bulls quarterback who went 5-3 in eight games starting for Alex Golesh’s football team last fall, pitched three scoreless innings vs. No. 9 Florida State last Tuesday. Archie was hitting 94 mph with his fastball and record four strikeouts and gave up three hits in 3.0 innings of work. The Bulls football team is expected to be in attendance Tuesday vs. FIU to cheer Archie on.
Series History:
The Bulls and the Panthers have met 37 times in a series that dates back April 25, 1975, a 9-7 Bulls win in Tampa. The Panthers hold the overall lead in the series 20-17. USF won the two most recent meetings, March 15, 2022 in Miami and March 1, 2022 in Tampa.
Note-A-Bull:
• USF’s road series win at Georgia Southern marked just the seventh road non-conference series win in program history and the first since winning 2-of-3 at Miami in 2002.
USF logged 35 hits on the series while scoring 30 runs.
• Under Mitch Hannahs the Bulls have come out running. After logging seven stolen bases at Georgia Southern, USF has 16 swipes on the year to rank No. 28 nationally for total steals and 31st with 2.29 per game. The Bulls have been caught just three times for a 84.2% success rate. Five players have at least two swipes, led by shortstop Bradke Lohry (4-4), catcher Lance Trippel (3-3) and outfield Marcus Brodil (3-3) who are perfect on the year.
• Left-hander Corey Braun, starting his second game for USF, gave the Bulls a strong outing in the first game at Georgia Southern, completing six innings, giving up one run, recording seven strikeouts and scattering four hits.
• Right-hander James Hill got his first win of the season at Georgia Southern. Hill gave up only one hit and faced just two more batters than the minimum through four innings.
• Junior Ryan Pruitt continued his hot start to the season, Pruitt had two doubles, scored three runs and drove in one against Georgia Southern. Pruitt leads the Bulls with a .360 batting average and nine hits and is tied for the team lead with seven RBI.
Hannahs at the Helm:
Mitch Hannahs was named South Florida’s eighth head coach in program history on June 8, 2024, after compiling 355 wins over 11 seasons at Indiana State. The 2023 ABCA NCAA DI Midwest Region Coach of the Year guided the Sycamores to six conference titles and five NCAA Regionals, guiding ISU to a spot in the 2023 NCAA Super Regional. He takes over a USF team that went 26-29 last year and features 24 new players.
60th Year of USF Baseball:
The South Florida Baseball program played its first season in 1966 and will enter its 60th campaign in 2025. The Bulls have made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and earned their first-ever Super Regional berth in 2021. USF has won 11 conference titles – five tournament titles (3 Sun Belt, 1 Metro and 1 American) and six regular season championships (3 Sun Belt, 2 Metro and 1 C-USA). Bulls baseball players have been recognized with All-America honors 12 times and 19 Bulls have earned Freshman All-America accolades.
