USF Baseball: Bulls fall to Iowa

Bulls and Hawkeyes close the series Sunday at 10 a.m.

TAMPA, FEB. 15, 2025 – University of South Florida baseball dropped the middle game of a three-game series vs. Iowa Saturday, falling 8-2 to the Hawkeyes at the USF Baseball Stadium.

The Bulls and Hawkeyes will finish the three-game series with a 10 a.m. first pitch Sunday at the USF Baseball Stadium. The game time was moved up due to the threat of inclement weather.

The Bulls jumped out to an early lead in the first inning for the second straight game. Bradke Lohry led off the inning with a walk and scored when Lance Trippel doubled down the left field line. Marcus Brodil, who had also drawn a walk ahead of Trippel’s double, advanced to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Mayo, giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead.

Iowa came back with a lead-off double and then a two-run home run from Miles Risley to start the second. After giving up another single, Bulls starter James Hill settled in and got three outs with the help of a diving catch from Mayo in left to move to the bottom half tied 2-2.

Iowa took the lead in the third, scoring on a triple down the right field line by Reese Moore. The Bulls went to Matt Brown in the bullpen and Brown retired three batters to strand Moore at third and go to the bottom half of the inning trailing 3-2.

Iowa extended its lead in the fourth as Gabe Mitchell drove in a run with a double and the Hawkeyes made it 6-2 in the fifth when Daniel Rogers launched a two-run home run over the right field wall. In the seventh, Iowa’s Jackson Beaman hit a blast over the left field wall and, in the eighth, Moore doubled to center to drive in one more to push the lead to 8-2.

Key Stats:

• The Hawkeyes out-hit the Bulls 11 to 3, including eight extra base hits: four doubles, a triple and three home runs.

• Bulls starter James Hill went two innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out three.

• The Hawkeye’s pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts in the game.

Notables:

• USF sent five pitchers to the mound. Matt Brown saw the most action pitching 3.2 innings and giving up three runs on three hits.

• After going 2-for-3 on Friday with four RBI, junior Ryan Pruitt added a double in three at bats on Saturday. Pruitt has four of the Bulls six hits on the season.

• Catcher Lance Trippel recorded an RBI for the second straight game, driving in a run with a double.
