He secures a spot on the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay Olympic Team.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Day three of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials saw five Florida swimmers in Monday night’s Final session. Kieran Smith became the first Gator to punch his ticket to Paris inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Additionally, Emma Weyant made her Olympic berth after finishing second in the 400m IM.
In all, 15 swimmers represented Florida throughout Monday’s events. Anna Auld, Adam Chaney, Catie Choate, Bobby Dinunzio, Zoe Dixon, Bobby Finke, Gio Linscheer, Jake Mitchell, Josh Parent, Bella Sims, Kieran Smith, Andrew Taylor and Luke Whitlock returned to the competition pool, while Sofia Plaza and Andrew Taylor made their Olympic Trials debut on the football field.

The reining Tokyo Olympic Trials Champion, Emma Weyant climbed her way to first her last breaststroke leg split, 40.25. Similar to morning prelims, the silver medalist in Tokyo went neck-and-neck with Katie Grimes in the final stretch. Weyant dropped three seconds from her seed time to go 4:35.56 for silver.
Zoe Dixon dropped more than a second off her morning time (3:43.30) for a new personal-best, touching the wall in 4:42.01. The SEC Championships silver medalist finished seventh overall to mark her best Olympic Trial finish.

Kieran Smith made his second-consecutive Olympic Team after taking fourth in the 400m free following his 1:45.61. His top-four finish gives him a spot on the U.S. 4×200 Freestyle Relay team. Smith finished second in the 400m free on Saturday, but as with Weyant, even though they placed in the top-two with an Olympic Qualifying Time, only the winner of each event secures a spot on Team USA. It will be more than likely once the team fills out over the week.
Jake Mitchell swam a similar pace to his prelim time to notch seventh. The Tokyo Olympian recorded a 1:46.48 to just miss the sixth Olympic relay spot.

Following his personal-best 53.08 that he set in last night’s Semifinals, Adam Chaney sat in top-two position until the final stretch. The Pan American gold medalist finished fourth after touching the wall in 53.44.

Anna Auld was the first Gator to swim this morning, representing Florida in the second heat. She kept steady in sixth place through the first two strokes, but crept to fifth after making moves in the breaststroke. Auld’s final turn helped her finish in 4:53.56 to earn third in her heat and 30th overall.
Incoming freshman Sofia Plaza swam in heat five of six. The North Carolina native swam a strong final 50 meters in 4:47.76. She finished just shy of her personal-best 4:47.14, which was set at the Phillips 66 USA National Championships in June of 2023. Plaza finished 11th overall out of 40.
Gator Duo Emma Weyant and Zoe Dixon were sitting second and third following the opening leg of the final 400m IM heat. Weyant, who won Silver in the event at the Toyko Olympics made her move from third to first after going 39.58 in the first 50 meters of her breaststroke. She grabbed the top spot over Olympic Qualifier Katie Grimes heading into the final leg and was able to maintain her lead to the wall. Weyant placed first overall with 4:38.96. Her teammate swimming two lanes was in second after her first 50m backstroke split (36.11) Once Weyant made her move in the third leg, Dixon fell to fourth and stayed in fourth until the end. The junior clocked a 4:43.30 to finish sixth overall and join her fellow Gator in the Finals.

Making her third-straight appearance in Indy, Bella Sims swam in the fourth heat of a 100m back event that had 10 swimmers go sub-1:00. The NCAA All-American dropped nearly a second off her personal-best to win her heat in 1:00.88. Sims recorded the top time out of the first four heats, but placed 18th overall to miss a semifinal spot by 0.17.
Competing in the fifth heat, Catie Choate set a new personal-best after touching the wall in 1:01.12. She she second heading into the final 50 meters and remained in second to the wall. The sophomore placed 21st overall in her Olympic Trial debut.

Five Gators closed out morning prelims, with Luke Whitlock and Bobby Finke securing Final spots after going one-two. The incoming freshman came off the blocks in dominate fashion and kept his lead the entire race. Whitlock won his heat by over two seconds with 7:51.22 to secure the top Final seed. Finke, who won gold in the event four years ago, advances after confidently winning the final heat in 7:51.71 to grab the second seed.
Similar to NCAA Championships, Andrew Taylor and Gio Linscheer swam side-by-side in heat three. Taylor’s 8:04.59 crushes his previous personal best by over two seconds (8:06.86). The sophomore turned the on the jets in the final stretch to move into second place where he finished just ahead of Linscheer, who placed third in 8:05.04 after marking his second-best personal time.
Following yesterday’s personal-best swim in the 400m IM, Josh Parent rattled off another with his 8:07.52. The current Gator headed into the final 100 meters in third place and jumped to second in the final stretch to finish second in heat five. Swimming in the same heat was Bobby Dinunzio, who finished in 8:10.05 to mark his second-best time in the last year. The Virginia Beach native placed 42nd overall.

UP NEXT
The U.S. Olympic Swim Trials continues on Tuesday, June 18 inside Lucas Oil Stadium. The men’s 200m fly kicks off morning prelims, with the 100m free following. The women get distant, swimming the 1500m free before speeding thing ups in the 100m free. The men’s 200m breast will conclude Tuesday’s morning session. Paris qualifiers in the women’s 100m backstroke and the men’s 800m freestyle will be determined in the night session. Additionally, both 100m free Semifinals will take place Tuesday night along with the men’s 200m fly and 200m breast.

OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TIMES:
For individual events at the Paris Games, there are two types – Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) and Olympic Consideration TIME (OCT), per World Aquatics. Swimmers who match or better the OQT in one or more individual events, qualify for Olympic competition automatically. Participating countries may enter two (2) athletes in the same event, only if both swimmers’ times are equivalent or under the OQT. The OCT threshold works differently. Should the OQT not yield a quota of 852 total swimmers, “World Aquatics will then invite athletes who have equaled or bettered an OCT, until the total quota of 852 athletes is reached.”

Swimming at the 2024 Olympic Games will be held at the Paris La Defense Arena, located in the city of Nanterre. Indoor swimming kicks off July 27 and runs through August 4; in total, 35 medal events will be competed. Olympic swimming competition concludes with the men’s and women’s open water (10km marathon swimming) races taking place August 8-9. The full Team USA roster for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will be confirmed in July.
