BOCA RATON, Fla. – North Texas defeated the Florida Atlantic University softball team on Sunday in the home finale by a 1-0 total in extra innings. The Mean Green complete the weekend sweep and drop the Owls’ record to 30-18 and 12-9 in C-USA play.
Prior to the game, the Owls hosted a ceremony to commemorate the naming of Joan Joyce Field. Joyce, the Owls’ longtime head coach and a member of 21 Halls of Fame who passed away last March, was honored as her brother Joey & sister Janis joined the Owls for a pregame ceremony. Joey and Janis were given a plaque with two tickets from the first game held at Joan Joyce Field, which was on Friday.
After the game, the Owls held Senior Day to honor their nine-member senior class of Maya Amm, Sommer Baker, Maddie Carlock, Sara Berthiaume, Olivia Peterson, Caryssa Orland, Riley Ennis, Lynn Gardner and Raegan Conley.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gabby Sacco was brilliant in the circle once again as the Owls’ starting pitcher, carrying a no-hitter into the top of the eighth inning. Sacco finally surrendered her first hit, but the baserunner was erased and the inning ended when Peterson caught the runner stealing.
The Owls had a chance in the bottom of the seventh with two on and no out, yet a 5-5-4 double play squandered the scoring threat. The Mean Green took the lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning.
Despite the loss, Sacco stands at 18-6 with a 1.40 ERA on the season. Today was her 14th complete game of the season.
BACK NEXT WEEKEND
The Owls will head to UTSA for a three-game series next weekend from May 5-7.
