JOHN FOX – SENIOR DEFENSIVE ASSISTANT
Fox embarks on his 31st NFL season in 2023 after most recently serving as the Indianapolis Colts’ senior defensive assistant in 2022. Prior to joining the Colts, Fox spent 16 consecutive seasons as an NFL head coach, serving in that capacity for the Chicago Bears (2015-17), Denver Broncos (2011-14) and Carolina Panthers (2002-10). In his head coaching career, Fox compiled a 133-123 record in the regular season and an 8-7 record in the postseason, producing seven playoff berths and winning the 2003 NFC Championship with the Panthers and the 2013 AFC Championship with the Broncos. Prior to becoming an NFL head coach, Fox spent five seasons as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator (1997-2001), helping the Giants rank third in the NFL in sacks (230) and capture an NFC Championship (2000) in that span. Fox’s other NFL stints include serving as a St. Louis Rams consultant (1996), the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders’ defensive coordinator (1994-95), the San Diego Chargers’ secondary coach (1992-93) and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary coach (1989-91). Fox has also served in a variety of college jobs, working as Pitt’s defensive coordinator/secondary coach (1986-88), Iowa State’s secondary coach (1984), Kansas’ secondary coach (1983), Utah’s secondary coach (1982), Long Beach State’s secondary coach (1981), Boise State’s secondary coach (1980), U.S. International’s defensive backs coach and as a graduate assistant at San Diego State in 1978. In 1985, he served as the secondary coach of the Los Angeles Express of the USFL.
JIM HOSTLER – SENIOR OFFENSIVE ASSISTANT
Hostler, entering his 24th NFL season in 2023, joins the Lions after spending the past three seasons with the Washington Commanders, serving as their senior offensive assistant from 2021-22 and wide receivers coach in 2020. He helped WR Terry McLaurin post 1,000 receiving yards in each of his three seasons on staff, becoming Washington’s first player to post three-straight 1,000-yard seasons since WR Henry Ellard from 1994-96. Hostler’s previous NFL experience includes serving as the Carolina Panthers’ wide receivers coach (2019), Green Bay Packers’ passing game coordinator (2018), Indianapolis Colts’ tight ends coach (2016-17) and wide receivers coach (2015), Buffalo Bills’ senior offensive assistant (2014), Baltimore Ravens’ wide receivers coach (2008-13), San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator (2007) and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), New York Jets’ wide receivers coach (2004) and quarterbacks coach (2003), New Orleans Saints’ assistant wide receivers coach (2001-02) and the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive quality control coach (2000). Before joining the NFL coaching ranks, Hostler had a 10-year stint at the college level, serving in a variety of roles on both sides of the ball at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1990-92, 1994-99) with a stint as the offensive coordinator at Juniata College in between (1993).
JOHN SCOTT JR. – DEFENSIVE LINE
Scott Jr. comes to Detroit after spending the past three seasons at Penn State, serving as the team’s defensive line coach/run game coordinator in 2022 and as the defensive line coach from 2020-21. In 2022, Penn State ranked sixth in the FBS with 43 sacks and finished the season ranked No. 7 in the AP poll with an 11-2 record. Prior to his stint at Penn State, Scott Jr. served as the defensive line coach at South Carolina (2019) and Arkansas (2017-18). His only NFL experience came with the New York Jets, serving as their assistant defensive line coach in 2016 and as a defensive quality control coach in 2015. Before entering the NFL ranks, Scott Jr. served a defensive coach at several colleges, including Texas Tech (2013-14), Georgia Southern (2010-12), Missouri State (2009), Western Carolina (2006-08), Norfolk State (2005) and Louisiana-Lafayette (2003-04). | |
