MIAMI (October 12, 2022) – With the 2022 MLS regular season in the rearview mirror, Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced the finalists for its year-end awards. Two Inter Miami CF players, Drake Callender and Gonzalo Higuaín, have earned nominations as finalists for their respective categories thanks to stellar regular seasons performances.
Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year
Callender has been nominated as one of three finalists for Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, along with Philadelphia Union’s Andre Blake and New England Revolution’s Djordje Petrovic.
The 25-year-old California native made his first professional start in March following two previous seasons in the Club’s development pathway, going on to make the First Team starting goalkeeper position his own, making 24 regular season starts. In that time, Callender was made MLS Team of the Week on three occasions, including a Week 12 performance in which he kept a clean sheet against eventual Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union and made a SportsCenter Top 10 save.
Callender provided essential saves at key moments throughout the campaign, notably making his mark in the final stretch of the regular season with match-winning saves in the late stages of matches against Columbus Crew and D.C. United, followed by a clean sheet against Toronto FC.
Comeback Player of the Year
Higuaín was nominated as one of three finalists for MLS Comeback Player of the Year, alongside San Jose Earthquakes’ Jeremy Ebobisse and CF Montréal’s Kei Kamara.
The Argentine striker came back from a difficult 2021 personally following the unfortunate loss of his mother that affected his on-the-pitch performances for much of the campaign. This season, Higuaín suffered injuries that kept him out of the starting XI for 15 consecutive MLS games (from April 9 until July 16), but despite the difficult circumstances, Higuaín came off the bench on July 13 and scored one of the Club’s best goals of the year, which turned around his season and kicked off his impressive form of 16 goal contributions in his last 16 games.
Higuaín finished the regular season with a franchise record 16 goals over 28 appearances, 20 of them starts. The remarkable run of form to close the season capped his final regular season as the legendary striker recently announced that he will retire following the conclusion of the team’s playoff run.
AT&T 5G 2022 MLS Goal of the Year
One of Higuaín’s 16 goals was chosen as a finalist for AT&T 5G 2022 MLS Goal of the Year. The goal came when the striker stepped up to take the free kick against the New York red Bulls, replicating his first-ever Inter Miami goal, and blasting a free kick into the top corner of the net at Red Bull Arena.

Leonardo Campana also netted a goal worthy of a place among the finalists for the award. The Ecuardorian’s signature moment came just 35 seconds into the team’s playoff clinching win over Orlando City, when he sped past opposition center backs to a loose ball before chipping a perfectly weighted first-time effort over the keeper and into the back of the net from long distance. The goal also set a new team record for earliest goal scored by Inter Miami in a match.

2022 MLS Save of the Year presented by Allstate
Callender also earned a place among the Save of the Year candidates with the aforementioned match-winning save against the Columbus Crew. The young goalkeeper made the save in the 94th minute of a tight contest against the Crew in September, rapidly shifting back against his own momentum to leap and push away a potential redirected last-second equalizer for the visitors.

Drake Callender y Gonzalo Higuaín entre los finalistas para los premios de fin de año de la MLS
MIAMI (12 de octubre, 2022) – Con la temporada regular 2022 de la MLS ya en la retaguardia, la liga ha anunciado a los finalistas para los premios de fin de año. Dos jugadores de Inter Miami CF , Drake Callender y Gonzalo Higuaín, han sido nombrados entre los finalistas para sus respectivas categorías gracias a sus actuaciones estelares en el transcurso de la temporada regular.
Arquero del Año de la MLS presentado por Allstate
Callender ha sido nombrado entre los tres finalistas para el reconocimiento al Arquero del Año presentado por Allstate, junto con Andre Blake del Philadelphia Union y Djordje Petrovic del New England Revolution.
El jugador de 25 años oriundo de California sumó su primera titularidad como profesional en marzo luego de dos temporadas en el camino de desarrollo del Club, y posteriormente se adueñó del puesto de guardameta del Primer Equipo, formando parte del once inicial en 24 partidos de la temporada regular. En ese tramo, Callender fue nombrado en tres ocasiones en el Equipo de la Semana de la MLS, incluyendo en la semana 12 la que dejó su portería a cero frente al Philadelphia Union, cuadro que eventualmente terminó como líder en la Conferencia Este, y hizo una tapada que figuró en el Top 10 de SportsCenter.
Callender realizó atajadas esenciales en momentos claves en el transcurso de la campaña, en particular dejando su huella en el tramo final de la temporada regular con atajadas para ganar partidos en las instancias finales de los encuentros ante el Columbus Crew y D.C. United, seguido de una valla invicta contra Toronto FC.
Jugador con Espíritu de Superación del Año de la MLS
Higuaín fue nombrado entre los tres finalistas para el premio al Jugador con Espíritu de Superación del año de la MLS junto a Jeremy Ebobisse del San Jose Earthquakes y Kei Kamara de CF Montréal.
El delantero argentino tuvo un rendimiento sobresaliente después de un 2021 difícil en lo personal tras la lamentable pérdida de su madre que afectó su nivel sobre los terrenos de juego durante gran parte de la campaña. Esta temporada, Higuaín sufrió lesiones que lo alejaron del once inicial en 15 encuentros de la MLS (del 9 de abril hasta el 16 de julio), pero, a pesar de las circunstancias complicadas, Higuaín entró de cambio el 13 de julio y anotó uno de los mejores goles del Club este año, lo cual ayudó a dar vuelta a su temporada y dio inicio a una racha impresionante en la que contribuyó en 16 anotaciones en los últimos 16 cotejos que disputó.
Higuaín terminó la temporada regular con una cifra récord de la franquicia de 16 goles en 28 apariciones, 20 de ellas como titular. Su gran estado de forma en la recta final de la temporada ayudó a cerrar su última temporada regular, ya que el legendario artillero anunció que colgará la botas cuando finalice la participación del equipo en la postemporada.
Gol del Año de la MLS presentado por AT&T 5G
Uno de los 16 tantos de Higuaín fue elegido entre los finalistas para el premio al Gol del Año de la MLS presentado por AT&T 5G. El gol fue anotado cuando el delantero se colocó frente al balón para cobrar un tiro libre contra el New York Red Bulls, marcando de la misma manera que en su primer gol con Inter Miami , y clavó su remate en el ángulo superior de la red en el Red Bull Arena.
Leonardo Campana también anotó un tanto que merece su puesto entre los finalistas para el premio. El momento insignia del delantero ecuatoriano sucedió cuando se disputaba el segundo 35 del partido contra Orlando City SC en el que el equipo selló su boleto para los playoffs, cuando dejó en el camino a sus defensores para alcanzar un balón suelto antes de definir desde larga distancia con un disparo de primer intención precioso por encima del portero que terminó en el fondo de la red. El gol además estableció el récord para la anotación más temprana de Inter Miami en un partido.

Atajada del Año 2022 de la MLS presentada por Allstate
Callender además se encuentra entre los candidatos para la Atajada del año con la atrapada anteriormente mencionada que ayudó a sellar el triunfo sobre el Columbus Crew. El joven guardameta realizó la atajada en el minuto 94 de un cotejo reñido contra el Crew en septiembre, rápidamente reaccionando para rechazar un remate de los visitantes que había sido desviado en el camino y pudo haber igualado el marcador.
