BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team completed the first road trip of 2022, but the Owls did not enjoy the outcome they had hoped to receive, falling 9-1 to No. 24 Miami, on Wednesday night.

“We didn’t play defense. We didn’t pitch. We didn’t hit,” said John McCormack, FAU’s head coach. “It’s very disappointing… we have our hands full [against Delaware this weekend]. Early in the year, we can’t be concerned about the opponent. We have to be more concerned about ourselves. We have to do better in all facets of the game.”
THE BEGINNING
Starting pitcher Marc DeGusipe gave up an earned run in the bottom of the first. Both teams were held scoreless in the second. The second time through the lineup sophomore Nolan Schanuel drove a ball into the parking garage just beyond the right field wall to even things up, but the 1-1 score would not hold with the Canes putting up three in the bottom half of the frame for a 4-1 lead.
THE TURNING POINT
The fourth, fifth and sixth innings were quiet for both sides. While FAU, who came into the game averaging nearly 13 runs over the last three games, saw their bats fall silent. Miami then took advantage of Owl mistakes to pour on five more runs for the game’s 9-1 final.
THE FINISH
The Owls were kept off the board, held to just one run on two hits, but unexpected errors were the most costly for FAU. Each team went to the bullpen four times on the night with a total of 10 pitchers appearing in the game.
THE ARMS
- DeGusipe took the loss for the Owls after 2.2 on the mound
- Hayden Compton did not give up a run through 1.1 innings and earned three strikeouts
- Max Martzolf was charged with three earned runs following 2.1 innings of work
- Robert Wegielnik collected two outs, but not before he gave up two earned runs
- Brock Helverson threw a scoreless ninth
THE BATS
- The bats were silent most of the night. FAU recorded just two hits.

- Steven Loden led off the second with a single
WHAT’S NEXT
The Owls will return home for a three-game weekend series versus Delaware. Friday night’s series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
