MIAMI (June 19, 2021) – Inter Miami CF (2W-2D-5L, 8 points) fell 1-0 to D.C. United at Audi Field.
“The whole team never stopped running and fighting for each other. They stuck to the game plan, they trusted each other and that has got to be the norm from now on,” said head coach Phil Neville. “That’s what we’ve agreed as a team, those are the words the team used; desire, togetherness, spirit, confidence, support in each other. I thought we had that in abundance tonight. Even when we went down to nine men we had a team on the field that was 100% committed to the Inter Miami badge and that’s why I was super proud of them.”
Inter Miami opened the match with a fresh starting XI as Julián Carranza and Christian Makoun each made their second starts of the season, with Makoun featuring in a new position at left back. Leandro González Pirez wore the captain’s armband at Audi Field.
The early moments of the match were played at a frenetic pace, with both sides creating opportunities in transition. For Inter Miami, the opening 10 minutes saw Brek Shea serve as a consistent outlet down the left flank, finding the ball in space and hitting in a pair of dangerous crosses, notably one that found Lewis Morgan in the box, whose shot was saved.
D.C. blocked another pair of shots from dangerous areas by Miami, first in the 13th minute when a pacey volleyed cross from Makoun was deflected to Morgan on the edge of the box. In the 15th minute, Jay Chapman delivered a ball from the endline to the near post, where Carranza attempted a backheel shot that was blocked.
The hosts, however, had a number of dangerous chances of their own, coming from crosses into the box directed at Ola Kamara, but D.C. was unable to convert.
Perhaps the best sequence of the half for Inter Miami came in the first minute of added time; Nicolás Figal made a strong run down the right wing, beating a defender and playing a square ball to Morgan, who turned and threaded a pass to Shea behind the defense and in the box, but his shot was saved by Bill Hamid. Moments later, Figal recovered in a defensive transition to track down a D.C. United player and make a vital tackle, keeping the match scoreless heading into half time.
The second half, however, began with challenging circumstances for Inter Miami; in the 56th minute, Gregore was sent off as the referee handed him a second yellow for a foul. In the 71st minute, the referee whistled for a penalty for D.C., claiming a handball in the box, which Kamara converted moments later. The referee again involved himself in the proceedings in the 84th minute, handing Ryan Shawcross a red card.
Inter Miami will return to action on Friday, June 25 at 8 p.m. ET when it hosts the “Blackout DRV PNK Stadium” match against Orlando City SC.

MIAMI (19 de junio de 2021) – Inter Miami CF (2V-2E-5D, 8 puntos) cayó 1-0 ante el D.C. United en Audi Field.
“El equipo nunca dejó de correr y luchar el uno por el otro. Se apegaron al plan de juego, confiaron en sus compañeros y así tienen que ser las cosas de ahora en adelante”, dijo el director técnico Phil Neville. “Eso fue lo que acordamos como equipo, esas fueron las palabras que el equipo usó; deseo, unidad, espíritu, confianza, apoyarse el uno al otro. Pienso que tuvimos eso en abundancia esta noche. Incluso cuando jugábamos con nueve jugadores tuvimos un equipo sobre el campo que estaba 100% comprometido con el escudo de Inter Miami y es por eso que estoy muy orgulloso de ellos”.
Inter Miami inició el encuentro con un once inicial con varios cambios, ya que Julián Carranza y Christian Makoun fueron titulares por segunda vez esta temporada, con Makoun siendo desplegado en una nueva posición como lateral izquierdo. Además, Leandro González Pirez portó el gafete de capitán en el Audi Field.
En las instancias iniciales del partido el partido tuvo un ritmo electrizante, con ambos conjuntos generando ocasiones.
