Horschel, Castillo and Tesori represented Gators Golf in the prestigious tournament.
MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The 120th U.S. Open has concluded at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.
In third round of play on Saturday, Billy Horschel shot 2-over par, bringing his total card to a 4-over par score of 214 and tied for 17th. The fourth and final round brought temperatures peaking at 62 degrees, as well as a layout that saw only champion Bryson DeChambeau shoot below par, while other golfers scores skyrocketed as far as 12-over. After a tough first six holes, Horschel birdied twice, on the seventh and ninth hole as he made the turn to the back nine, but was unsuccessful in beating the treacherous Winged Foot layout. The Gators All-American finished tied for 38th with a 14-over par score of 294.
Ricky Castillo competed in his first major championship at the U.S. Open. The phenom Gators sophomore didn’t make the cut, but posted numbers that challenged the professionals, shooting two shots off of Tiger Woods. The California native will return to Gainesville with one PGA TOUR event under his belt.
Former Gators golfer Paul Tesori, who was a member of the 1993 NCAA Championship-winning team, found more success. Tesori is currently the caddie for renowned golfer Webb Simpson. The pair found consistent success, shooting 1-over par in the first three rounds. After teeing it up on the first hole, Simpson played a perfect par on each green in the front nine. Withstanding the challenges of the back nine, Simpson finished with a final 6-over par score of 286 to tie for eighth.
Tesori has been Simpson’s caddie since 2010 and the duo has found unparalleled success together. In 2011, Simpson remarked, “Paul is an equal part of the team… A lot of guys don’t rely on their caddie as much as I do, which is fine. But I rely on him pretty heavily.”
The PGA TOUR will continue their 2020-21 ‘super season’ on Sept. 21 with the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship at the Puntacana Resort & Club.
