GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After much anticipation, the 2021 Toyota U.S. Open starts this week.
Opening day is December 1 and the competition goes through December 4, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
19 current Gators and Volunteer Coach Katie Ledecky<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_coaches.aspx-3Frc-3D1439&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=YPcddG9Off8ByGlFhm15yeVigsGdhSTg0G8JS4W2t8I&e= > will compete throughout the four long-course meter (LCM) event sessions. The annual event gives swimmers an opportunity to achieve Olympic-qualifying standards set forth by USA Swimming.
This long course meters meet is part of the USA Swimming Championship Series, where swimming’s biggest stars will continue to shine.
Day one eases into the race week with only one event, the 800-meter freestyle timed finals. The legendary talents of Katie Ledecky<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_coaches.aspx-3Frc-3D1439&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=YPcddG9Off8ByGlFhm15yeVigsGdhSTg0G8JS4W2t8I&e= > is set to lead the pack. On the men’s side, famous back-halfer Bobby Finke<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14716&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=0GtZme4O3uC1qyPpByzMfMkBzYZ523mpnhpjfwT0ozY&e= > comes in as top seed with Ross Dant in tow. Day one victories could set a good pace for Ledecky and Finke, who will have a busy distance week here.
Day two picks up with the 400m freestyle, 200m I.M. and 50m freestyle. In the 400m freestyle, Ledecky will again lead this distance race. The men’s side could get dicey – top swimmers Dant, Trey Freeman<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14717&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=85EWzqngJonPpzTxZkglD817IBDd9ElNk6lC-42h4Z0&e= >, Alfonso Mestre<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14728&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=FH_cO9DYe1UOJiRY9xvUtQXExOiTOjuzhTJc1mQvvFg&e= > and James Place will all be gunning for a victory over Finke in what could be a very tight race.
Ledecky, the top seed in the 200m freestyle, may feel some pressure from Madden and Leah Smith, in what will most likely be Ledecky’s closest race. Veteran Mallory Comerford could also make a big play here. On the men’s side, Urlando, and Freeman will lead the 200m freestyle field.
The 100 breaststrokes and backstrokes finish up day three, and again we’ll see some heavy hitters in both men’s and women’s races. Regan Smith, Katharine Berkoff and Baker, who all have huge credits to their names, will be under one minute with Smith leading the way and looking for another win. Hunter Tapp and Adam Chaney<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14710&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=M43v4A7N05osw5EVVm2ymxe5C2nBayZmc5WaLDYW7TY&e= > will heat up the men’s race with 53’s or lower. Urlando is also entered in this event and could make a surprise move up top.
Finally, the last day offers a busy lineup with five events, starting with the 1500m freestyle, where Ledecky and Finke are once again atop the psych sheets.
Ready for some sprinting action, the men’s 100m freestyle leads with Andrej Barna, Adam Chaney<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14710&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=M43v4A7N05osw5EVVm2ymxe5C2nBayZmc5WaLDYW7TY&e= >, Eric Friese<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14718&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=gmhPZWvcKM2KVTO8BfEvNVI82a2gE1yQDTsafyxgcz4&e= > and Justin Ress. Although a couple of seconds separate tops seeds, a large gap for a sprint, it’s still anybody’s race here. Urlando is entered in this event too, hoping for some finals action.
In the women’s 200m butterfly, second place will be up for grabs possibly by Leah Gingrich, Amanda Ray<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14757&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=IDgydF9jfFjQbiPyn2977Ap9lssDza7QbyKvHoBrB8k&e= >, Mabel Zavaros<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_roster.aspx-3Frp-5Fid-3D14763&d=DwIFAg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=-1K3eRdGxC-w6LPvyMEG87sYD8jC4lQWcBgREqMEBR-ymSCs4uJbCTqMgTN4sSXt&s=FVgCmmzh3EW-ZgqH9Z6Are_tRfU_Yr2iEpL8xpF5Mvg&e= >, and Leah Smith.
