USF’s Bergstrom Reels In More Conference Player of the Week Honors

Albin Bergstrom was named American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Week for the second straight week after leading the No. 20 Bulls to a wire-to-wire win at the USF Invitational.

The freshman has posted five straight top-five finishes and has shot par or better in each of the past 12 rounds.

TAMPA, MARCH 13, 2019 – USF’s Albin Bergstrom has been named American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Week for the second straight week following his runner-up finish at the USF Invitational.

The freshman from Ljunghusen, Sweden carded three rounds of par or better and placed second in the 84-player field Tuesday with a 7-under 209 (69-72-68). Bergstrom’s fifth straight top-five finish helped the No. 20 Bulls defend their USF Invitational title in wire-to-wire fashion and post back-to-back tournament wins.

Bergstrom’s latest standout performance included a team-best 14 birdies and he shot par or better on 47 of 54 holes at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club (par 72, 7,004 yards). Success at the USF Invitational paved the way for Bergstrom’s third conference player of the week honor this spring.

Dating back to USF’s fall finale, Bergstrom has shot par or better in each of the past 12 rounds and captured his first collegiate title at the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate on March 5. The member of Sweden’s junior national team currently leads USF with a 69.7 season scoring average and moved up to No. 42 in this week’s Golfstat NCAA rankings. Bergstrom also has moved into the top 100 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).

Bergstrom and the Bulls continue their spring season Sunday at the three-day Valspar Invitational, which takes place at The Floridian in Palm City.
