MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Laura Zemberyova found the back of the net in the 63rd minute to lead the UAB women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Middle Tennessee on Sunday evening.
The Blazers have won two straight and improve to 5-8-2 on the season. This match is not part of the Conference USA East/West crossover and will not be counted in the league standings. UAB currently tied for third place in the C-USA West with Rice with nine points.
After a scoreless first half, the game-winner came after Jessica Wheeler stole the ball off a Blue Raiders defender and found Zemberyova for a left-footed blast one step outside the box. The ball sailed over MT keeper Hannah Suder into the upper left corner of the goal.
For the match, UAB outshot MT 17-10. Zemberyova led all players with five shots, while Morgan Halliwill and Lexxe Lipsey each had four. Blazers keeper Eve Beyer made three saves in recording her sixth career clean sheet.
“This was an awesome weekend for us,” said head coach Erica Demers. “To win Friday night against North Texas and then to win at a great opponent like Middle Tennessee – I can’t say how I’m so proud of our girls tonight. Road wins are always tough to get and our team is managing them really well this season.”
Up next, the Blazers travel to Texas to take on UTSA (8-4-2, 3-2-1 C-USA) on Oct. 22. The Roadrunners defeated Rice earlier today and are currently in second place in C-USA West with 10 points.
