HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls entered the day with two strikes: they had never won an NCAA match and they had never defeated Old Dominion in three previous meetings. None of that mattered on Friday to an Owl team that has made a habit of knocking down obstacles in 2025 when they became the only team in FAU history to finish the regular season undefeated.
The Owls quickly took control of doubles court two and three and were battling on court one. It was Victoria Gomez O’Hayon and Millie-Mae Matthews who captured court two to force a point decision on court three which was eventually clinched by the FAU duo of Panna Bartha and Lexi Silna at 7-6(7-3).
The Owls moved into singles play with a 1-0 lead over the Monarchs and never relinquished control. Bartha captured court two by a 6-1, 6-3 score. Malwina Rowinska pulled the Owls within one point of clinching the match by taking court four to give FAU a 3-0 lead. After dropping court five, it was a race to see which Owl would clinch. Ultimately, it was senior Millie-Mae Matthews who sealed the victory with a 6-3, 7-5 win.
QUOTABLE
Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU’s Director of Tennis
“Today our girls played with a lot of maturity and professionalism. They stayed calm and composed in the tough moments. Our team played some good tennis and took care of business against a strong ODU team. Our girls are ready for another tough challenge tomorrow.”
