Maya Shanok, a Boca Raton native, is a junior at Florida Atlantic, where she continues to push herself both academically and athletically. Her journey to the college tennis scene has been anything but typical, shaped by the dual challenges of being a high-level athlete and managing Type 1 diabetes.

From the age of five, Shanok had a natural passion for tennis. Her love for the game drove her to compete at the next level, ultimately leading her to FAU in the fall of 2022. However, just before her freshman season, Shanok’s life took an unexpected turn. She began experiencing alarming symptoms, which prompted her to seek medical attention. After testing her blood sugar, doctors discovered that her levels were dangerously high, and within hours, she was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The diagnosis was days before her FAU freshman season was to begin. Even after being
told that continuing tennis might be too difficult with the new medical condition, she refused to let
it derail her dreams. The day after being released from the hospital, she returned to practice and
has not looked back.

Managing Type 1 diabetes as a D1 athlete is no small task. Shanok’s blood sugar levels fluctuate unpredictably, especially during intense physical exertion like running or playing a match. The stress of competition also plays a role, causing her blood sugar to rise, adding another layer of complexity to her already challenging routine. Despite the daily struggles, Shanok has learned to embrace her condition and push forward with a positive mindset.

“It’s hard to accept that this is my reality now, especially since I played tennis for so many years without having to deal with it,” Shanok admits. “But I’ve learned that as long as I’m still on the court, I’m happy.”

Shanok’s journey is a testament to the strength of her spirit and the power of her perseverance. Her story shows that anything is possible with the right mindset, determination, and support, no matter the obstacles.

Shanok credits much of her success at overcoming these challenges to the unwavering support of those around her. Her family, especially her mother, has been a pillar of strength.

“When I was diagnosed, my mom was constantly checking in on me, making sure I had everything I needed. She was always there to help me through the hard days,” Shanok reflects. “I have also had the support from coaches and teammates, all of which make me better every day.”

This strong support system has been crucial in helping Shanok with her condition and stay focused on what she loves most: playing tennis. Though she faces daily challenges, Shanok’s resilience shines through in how she manages her diabetes. Fluctuations with her sugar are hard to manage during matches, but with time and experience, she has learned how to adapt. She explains that these challenges make her want to work even harder, which makes her better every day.

Today, the now-junior continues to thrive as a Division 1 athlete. She is balancing the challenges of diabetes with her love for tennis. Her journey is an inspiration to others facing similar challenges
and proves that, with passion for what you do and support from the ones close to you, you can
overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
