West Broward High School has earned a new honor. The school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) team is the new state champion. West Broward High’s cadets took top honors in the Florida State Drill Meet, which took place in Lakeland, Florida, April 1 – 2.
The championship competition is sponsored by the 6th Brigade, United States Army Cadet Command, and includes qualifying schools throughout Florida. This year, the championship meet included 105 JROTC programs competing in 21 events.
In addition to West Broward High, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) JROTC programs from Cypress Bay High School, Everglades High School, Hallandale High School, Hollywood Hills High School, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Monarch High School, Piper High School, South Broward High School, South Plantation High School and Western High School also competed in the state championship.
“We are very proud of the West Broward High School JROTC team for winning the state championship. The cadets worked hard throughout the school year to qualify for this culminating event and their performance was outstanding,” said Lt. Colonel Ken Green (Ret.), coordinator, BCPS JROTC and Military Programs. “I also want to commend all of our JROTC programs that qualified and competed in the championship. Reaching this level of competition takes dedication and commitment. We congratulate them all for their achievements.”
BCPS has the largest JROTC program in the nation with a program in every traditional high school. There are 29 programs, consisting of all services, and two Entrepreneur and Leadership Academies, located at Hollywood Hills High School, which opened in 2015, and Boyd Anderson High School, which opened in the fall of 2020.
