SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Florida Atlantic Owls battled tough but ultimately fell short, 60-42 against the AAC-leading UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday in San Antonio.

With the loss, Florida Atlantic falls to 10-20 on the season and 2-15 in AAC play, while UTSA moves to 25-3 overall and 16-1 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Owls had a slow start as UTSA jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the first-period media break. Florida Atlantic outscored the Roadrunners 6-5 over the remainder of the first to get back within eight, 14-6, after the opening quarter.

Florida Atlantic kicked things into gear in the second quarter, opening the period on a 10-4 run, capped off by a 7-0 run with a pair of buckets from Alana Rouser and Zahira Arizmendi and a 3-pointer from Stefanie Ingram, to battle back within two, 18-16, at the second quarter media timeout. The Roadrunners answered back with a 13-2 run to close the half, stretching their lead, 29-18 at the break.

UTSA scored first to open the third, but back-to-back buckets from Ingram and a Ta’Ziah Jenks layup brought the Owls back within six at the 6:04 mark. The Owls kept things within nine, 39-30, with 1:40 to go after a layup from Jada Moore, however, the Roadrunners went on an 8-3 run to close out the third, extending the lead, 47-33.

Ingram hit her fourth three of the day to keep the Owls within 13, 51-38, with 4:28 to go, but Florida Atlantic just couldn’t close the gap as UTSA eventually took the 60-42 contest.

HEAD COACH JENNIFER SULLIVAN POSTGAME THOUGHTS

“Similar to our last game, I was really encouraged by our kids’ fight. I thought they showed up to compete. We had some game goals, especially defensively, that I thought we met, holding their leading scorer below her average and holding their team defensively below their average. Story of the game I think just came down to rebounding. I think we got enough stops, but just couldn’t get enough boards defensively and can’t give them offensive boards, gotta complete the stop. I was proud of them for showing up and fighting. Obviously, UTSA is a really talented team. Well-deserved championship win.”

NOTES AND TEAM STATS

  • Stefanie Ingram led the Owls offensively against UTSA. Ingram finished with a game-high 17 points, shooting 55 percent (6-of-11) from the field, 67 percent (4-of-6) from 3-point range, while also adding three assists, and a team-high two steals against the Roadrunners.
  • Jada Moore finished with a team-high four assists, and Alana Rouser led the Owls on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds.
