Vendrell Named C-USA Player of the Week
DALLAS –Angela Vendrell has been named Conference USA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after a career performance in which the senior posted a triple-double with 19 rebounds, 10 points and 10 assists.
Vendrell joins Deanna Jackson and Natasha Thomas as the only UAB players to record a triple-double and the first since 2001 when Thomas posted 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Texas Pan-American (now University of Texas Rio Grande Valley).
“Angela does so many things for our team, and it’s great to see her acknowledged for it this week after her play at Alcorn State,” said head coach Randy Norton.
Vendrell’s 19 boards were a career high and tied for sixth best in program history for a single game. The Alicante, Spain native dished out a team-high 10 assists, which is the most for her in a single game this season and one shy of her career high. She scored 10 points off 60.0 percent shooting including one three, only her fourth triple attempted this season.
The forward dominated defensively grabbing 15 of her 19 boards on the defensive end and adding one steal and one block. Her block brought her to 94 in her career, which moves her in a tie with Karisma Chapman for fifth place in UAB history. She led the team in rebounds for the seventh time this season and is averaging 9.8 per game. It was the third time she led the team in assists and is second on the team with 35 assists this season.
It is the first time Vendrell has been named C-USA Player of the Week. She is the second Blazer to take home the award this season, Miyah Barnes was named Co-Player of the Week back on Nov. 11.
UAB heads to New Orleans Friday, Dec. 20 to play in Tulane’s tournament. The Blazers will face Colorado on Friday and Texas Southern on Saturday with both games at 1 p.m. CST.
