USF WBB: South Florida To Celebrate Jose Fernandez’s 25th Women’s Basketball Season

Tampa, Fla. – Oct. 14, 2024 – Throughout the past 25-years at the University of South Florida, head coach Jose Fernandez has constructed South Florida women’s basketball into one of the top programs in the country, with nine NCAA Tournaments and perennial appearances in the Top-25 Poll.

The 2024-25 season, presented by Tampa General Hospital, marks the 25th anniversary of Coach Fernandez leading the Bulls. On Thursday, November 14, when South Florida hosts Vanderbilt, the anniversary season will be celebrated. That date marks the exact 25-year anniversary of Fernandez first stepping into his role as head coach at South Florida. The festivities will include a pregame ceremony and a special giveaway for Bulls Fans.

Coach Fernandez is one of six active head coaches who have been a head coach at a single Division I institution for 25 seasons or longer, and only one of eight who have been at their current D-I institution for 25 seasons or longer.

  • Won a Gold Medal with USA Basketball’s Women’s U18 National Team in the 2024 U18 FIBA AmeriCup as an Assistant Coach.
  • Recorded his 450th career victory during the 2023-24 season.
  • Two-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2018, 2021).
  • Nine NCAA Tournament appearances (eight in the past 12 seasons).
  • Thirteen straight 19-win seasons and 11 20-win seasons.
  • Has 19 wins against top 25-ranked teams, including No. 6 Mississippi State in 2020, No. 7 Stanford (2021 defending national champion), and No. 22 Texas and No. 17 Arkansas in 2022.
  • USF’s 2022-23 squad captured the AAC regular-season title.
  • USF’s 2020-21 team won the AAC regular-season title and the conference tournament championship.
