Tampa, Fla. – Nov. 9, 2024 – South Florida (2-0) heads to the Basketball Capital of the World for its first road test of the season at No. 2/2 UConn (1-0) on Sunday night in Gampel Pavilion. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. and the game will air live on SNY/Fox Sports Digitally.

SETTING THE STAGE

The Bulls are looking for their third straight win and their first victory of the season against a ranked opponent. The Huskies are on the hunt for their second straight win in the 34th all-time meeting between the two squads.

THE SOUTH FLORIDA-UCONN SERIES

UConn holds a 33-0 advantage over South Florida in the all-time series and the pairing spans back to the 2002-3 season. In the last clash, UConn topped USF, 60-52 (Nov. 21, 2021), in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

LAST TIME OUT

Graduate guard Sammie Puisis led all scorers and collared a season-best 25 points and matched a career-best seven three-pointers in South Florida’s, 68-51, win against Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday night. For the second straight game, the Bulls saw three or more performers in double-digit points, as junior forward Carla Brito had a season-best 13 points and graduate guard Mama Dembele added 11 points and six assists. Senior forward L’or Mputu grabbed a career-best 12 boards. Sophomore Forward Fatou Diakite matched a personal-best three blocks in her debut for the Green & Gold. With the victory, Head Coach Jose Fernandez (253 wins) surpassed Geno Auriemma (UConn, 252 wins) and now holds sole possession of the all-time wins record as a member of The American Conference. Fernandez is already the owner of the all-time conference.

BEST OF THE BULLS

The Bulls currently have two players averging double-digit points: Graduate guard Sammie Puisis (19.0 ppg.) & senior forward L’or Mputu (12.9 ppg.). Mputu leads on the glass with a 9.5 rebound average. Graduate guard Mama Dembele is USF’s top assister with 7.0 apg. (Tied 17th nationally).

BRING OUT THE SILVER

Head Coach Jose Fernandez enters his 25th season at the helm of the South Florida Women’s Basketball Program. Fernandez is one of 6 active head coaches who have been a head coach at a single DI institution for 25 seasons or longer. On Thursday, November 14, when South Florida hosts Vanderbilt, the anniversary season will be celebrated. That date marks the exact 25-year anniversary of Fernandez first stepping into his role as head coach at South Florida.
