South Florida Falls To No. 2/2 UConn, 86-49
Storrs, Conn. – Nov. 10, 2024 – South Florida women’s basketball (2-1) fell, 86-49, to No. 2/2 UConn (2-0) at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday evening.
Mama Dembele finished the night with 12 points, five assists, and two steals. Sammie Puisis (10 points) scored her third straight game in double-figures.
Paige Beckers led UConn with 22 points and one of three Huskies to put up double-digit points.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
At the conclusion of the first frame, back-to-back 3-pointers from Dembele and Puisis cut UConn’s lead to four points before Sarah Strong made a driving layup. The score was 19-13 UConn after the first 10 minutes of action.
Midway through the second quarter, the Huskies used an 11-0 scoring stretch to cement their lead, 38-21, with 1:15 to play before the break. Then in the last four minutes of the third frame, UConn put together a 15-2 run. Ashlynn Shade had six points and Sarah Strong had five to make up 11 of those points, and the Huskies led 73-39 at the end of the third quarter.
UConn expanded its lead to as high as 35 points in the fourth quarter to secure the Bulls’ defeat.

South Florida returns home to the Yuengling Center and welcomes Vanderbilt on Thursday, Nov. 14. On Thursday night, Head Coach Jose Fernandez’s 25th season will be celebrated throughout the night with a special giveaway for fans and a pregame ceremony. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will stream live on ESPN+.
