USF WBB: Bulls Best Shockers In AAC Tournament Thriller, 69-62

Fort Worth, Texas – March. 10, 2024 – South Florida women’s basketball (19-13) saw four performers in double-figures for the third time this season in their 69-62 victory against Wichita State (10-22) on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the AAC Tournament.

Sophomore wing Carla Brito led the Bulls with a 14-point output and eight boards. Redshirt senior guard Aerial Wilson (13 points) and redshirt junior Romi Levy (13) combined for 26 points. Junior forward L’or Mputu (career-best 12 points and personal-high 11 rebounds) finished the night with her first career double-double.

The Bulls dished out 19 assists on 26 made baskets, Wilson had a hand on five of those assists.

HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED

The game was tied 61-61 all with 68 seconds left to play. Mputu made a clutch layup to jumpstart a Bulls 8-1 run to close out the game. On the way to victory, Brito made five shots at the line in addition to one by Wilson.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • South Florida’s all-time record against Wichita St. now sits at 9-3.
  • Wilson (490 career assists) has secured the sixth spot on the AAC Career Total Assists Ledger, she passed Kay Kay Wright (UCF, 2016-20, 490 career assists).
  • Freshman guard Vittoria Blasigh (74 3-pointers) is now tied in ninth place with Kitija Laksa (2015-16) on the program’s single-season 3-pointers made index.
  • With the victory, Head Coach Jose Fernandez has now recorded his 17th 19-win season and 13th straight.
  • South Florida improved its all-time record in AAC Tournament games to 18-9.
  • Wilson knocked down a career-best four 3-pointers.
  • South Florida is 3-0 when four performers finish in double-figure points.
  • L’or Mputu (career-best 12 points and personal-high 11 rebounds) finished the night with her first career double-double.

Fifth-seed South Florida moves on to face fourth-seed UTSA in the AAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Monday, Mar. 11. Tipoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. ET and the game will stream live on ESPN+.
