USF Volleyball: Volleyball Heads West for a Pair of AAC Road Tests

South Florida will face UTSA and Wichita State.  

TAMPA, October 5, 2023 – The University of South Florida volleyball team (10-6, 4-1 AAC) will head on the road again to face UTSA and Wichita State this Friday and Sunday. 

The Bulls welcomed the UAB Blazers to the Yuengling Center on Friday and Saturday. South Florida swept the Blazers in straight sets to improve to 4-1 in conference play. It’s the best start for the Bulls since joining the American Athletic Conference. Buse Hazan (Istanbul, Turkey) led the Bulls with 33 kills. She earned the title of AAC Offensive Player of the Week.  

South Florida joined the American in 2013 and is off to their best start since joining. Through the first five matches, the Bulls are 4-1. The only loss was against Memphis on September 24. 

The Bulls have served a total of 115 aces as a team this season. They lead the American Athletic Conference in team total aces and aces per set. The Bulls averaged 1.92 aces per set which ranks 27th in the nation. The 115 aces as a team ranks 24th in the nation.  

Head coach Jolene Shepardson has been a head coach for 13 seasons. She has 148 wins as a head coach. She needs two more to reach 150 in her career.

Scouting the opponent:  

  • UTSA dropped a pair of matches last weekend to RV Rice.  
  • Mia Soerensen is averaging 3.42 kills per set for a total of 188 kills this season, leading the Roadrunners.  
  • Alicia Coppedge leads UTSA with 56 blocks. She averages 1.04 blocks per set.  

Wichita State (9-5, 3-1 AAC)

Scouting the opponent:  

  • Wichita State split a pair of matches at SMU last weekend.  
  • Natalie Foster currently leads the Shockers in kills (141), service aces (11), and blocks (62).  
  • Gabi Maas leads the team with 192 digs. She averages 3.62 per set.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater in 2023. Named head coach on Jan. 8, 2020, Shepardson led the Bulls’ program to its last conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance as a student-athlete in 2002. USF made its last postseason appearance in 2018, posting 20 wins and appearing in the NIVC. USF Volleyball has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won 12 conference titles since its inception in 1972. The Bulls play in The Corral (1,000), adjacent to the Yuengling Center on the USF campus.
