USF Stuns No. 22/14 Charlotte on Oscar Resano’s Goal with Four Seconds Left

The win over the 49ers is the second Top 25 victory for the Bulls this season.

TAMPA (Oct. 25, 2022) – Oscar Resano scored the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining to lift the University of South Florida men’s soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win over No. 22/14 Charlotte on Tuesday night at Transamerica Field. The Bulls improve to 4-5-4 on the year and 3-1-3 in the American Athletic Conference. The 49ers fall to 8-3-2 overall and 2-3-2 in conference play.

With less than 10 seconds left on the clock, Brian Schaefer took the ball for a throw-in and send a perfectly placed pass into the six-yard box where Resano went high above his defender and sent a header to the far post and into the net, from basically no angle, stunning Charlotte.

The win for the Bulls marked the first loss for the 49ers at home this season who came into the match 6-0 at Transamerica Field. In addition, Charlotte came into the contest having outscored its opposition on its home pitch 28-2.

The Green and Gold held a 10-9 advantage in shots while accounting for five of the 10 shots on goal during the evening, after holding a 7-1 shot margin and all three shots on frame in the first 45 minutes of play.

After a scoreless first half, Ajmeer Spengler got South Florida on the board in the 63’ when he took a pass from Jemone Barclay and beat the 49ers’ Thomas Walls to make the score 1-0.

Charlotte, however, got the equalizer 13 minutes later on a big bender from 19 yards out from Callum Watts. The offering found the far top left corner of the goal just out of reach of the Bulls’ diving Jackson Weyman in the 76’.

But that was all Charlotte could get on the night as Weyman made all four of his saves in the second half, including several spectacular stops in the final 25 minutes of play.
