USF Softball: USF Softball Sets Four Season-Highs in a Dominating Performance Over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas., May 5, 2024 –The University of South Florida softball team (34-21, 13-14 AAC) set four season highs in the win over the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (15-41, 5-22 AAC). The Bulls won with a final score of 14-4 in five innings.

The 14 runs are a season-high for South Florida. The previous high was 12 runs scored at Memphis. As a team, South Florida totaled 15 hits, the most since March 20, 2021, when the Bulls had 15 hits against North Dakota. South Florida garnered 13 RBI, one more than the previous high of 12 at Memphis. They also had a season-high of five doubles.

South Florida took the early 6-0 lead through the first two innings. The first four runs came in the first inning off an RBI double from Camille Ortiz-Martinez (Salinas, Puerto Rico) and a three-run home run from Alyssa Rano (Seminole).

In the second inning, with the bases loaded, Alex Wilkes (Tampa) hit a sacrifice fly for the Bulls’ fifth run. Ortiz-Martinez followed with her second RBI double for the 6-0 lead.

UTSA scored two runs in the bottom of the third.

Ortiz-Martinez continued her career game with a solo home run in the fourth inning to give South Florida the 7-2 lead.

After UTSA scored two more runs in the fourth inning, South Florida answered with seven runs in the fifth. Alex Wilkes, Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel), DaNia Brooks (Tampa), and Jocelyn Wilkes (Tampa) had an RBI. Kadlub, Brooks, and Jocelyn Wilkes led with two.  

Belle Sardja (Gibsonton) earned her 23rd start of the season. She pitched 3.1 innings striking out two. Lexie Kopko (Stewartstown, Pa.) made her 17th appearance., She pitched 1.2 hitless innings, also striking out two.

South Florida will head to Wichita, Kansas for the 2023 American Athletic Conference Tournament. The tournament will start on Wednesday, May 8.
