TAMPA (July 6, 2020) – University of South Florida head men’s soccer coach Bob Butehorn has announced the signing of defender Max Gottwald (Schotten, Germany) to a National Letter of Intent (NLI).
Gottwald joins Oscar Resano (Mexico City) and Shion Soga (Aichi, Japan), who signed in June, along with Segun Afolabi (Austell, Ga.), Josh Gomina (Sampa, Ghana), Donovan Hesselmeyer (North Ft. Myers, Fla.), Jeffrey “JT” Copper (Tampa, Fla.) and Brian Schaefer (Atlantic Beach, Fla.), who also inked NLIs in December.
“We are excited to have a player of Max’s quality join the squad,” said Butehorn. “He has high-level experience and has been an important leader on successful teams. He is able to play in the back or as a midfielder and I expect his versatility and ability to have an immediate impact for us.”
Gottwald attended school at Staatliches Sportgymnasium Jena, in Jena, Germany, and played his club soccer for FC Carl Zeiss Jena. He captained his side from 2016-20 and led the 2018 Carl Zeiss team that earned promotion to the U19 Bundesliga. He has been selected for the club’s first team 13 times, making four appearances.
Gottwald was named to the Thuringia Regional Team in both 2016 and 2017.
During the 2019 campaign, USF posted an 11-7-1 record that included a win over No. 5 Louisville and advanced to its 21st NCAA Tournament appearance.
